TRIGON BIENNALE is an important European Biennial in Graz which is part of the famous STEIRISCHER HERBST, a very international, annual cultural event, including art, music, theatre, dance, which in the core was the first biennial reuniteing Eastern-European, at the time communist countries with Middle Europeen and Western European countries. Martin Kunz was called as commissioner of it from 1981- 1989 with the mission to nominate young Swiss but also other European artists who had no commissioner, as a kind of wild card. The themes like the one 1983 was discussed and defined a year ahead. Not many commisioners were nominated so many times in a row. This time he proposed with the thema the three Swiss artists (Emery, Keller, Müller) and Richard Deacon as a British sculptor who first showed internationally in Lucerne (1982) and later proposed British critic Mark Francis as writer, who in later Trigons was commissioner for Britain.
