This catalogue of the work of the Austrian artist Maria Lassnig bears the title Mit dem Kopf durch die Wand (Through the Wall with My Head) and was collaboratively produced by Kunstmuseum Luzern and two Austrian museums: Neue Galerie Graz and Wiener Secession. It documents the artist’s first international exhibition outside of her native country, and in addition to covering the initial period of her activity, dating back to the 1950s, in which her works were both highly linear and at the same time highly expressive, it also documents her painterly research, dating from the beginning of the 1980s. Both of these phases of her work dealt with highly female themes as well as with the artist’s own body, experimenting with a mode of painting which counts as an extension of her body. The content of Maria Lassnig’s work shows affinities with that of the work of artists such as Louise Bourgeois and Alice Neel, as this catalogue amply reveals.
