A two-volume catalogue on the work of Giulio Paolini, published by Kunstmuseum Luzern, edited by Martin Kunz, and with a critical text by Max Wechsler.
The Latin title “Hortus Clausus”—walled garden—refers to the large solo show with which Giulio Paolini, in 1981, occupied as an artist's installation the main exhibition spaces of Kunstmuseum Luzern, and to which these two volumes are complementary.
The first, in black, bears the title (on its back cover) Giulio Paolini, Werke und Schriften 1960–1980, Kunstmuseum Luzern (Giulio Paolini, Works and Texts, 1960–1980, Kunstmuseum Luzern) and documents (with illustrations) a representative selection of his large body of work created in those years.
The second volume takes its title from the show itself—Hortus Clausus—and nearly has the character of an artist’s book in which Paolini presents drawings that return to a Renaissance style, based on the period’s studies of perspective and its representations of ideal spaces. This second volume also contains a critical text by Martin Kunz.
Giulio Paolini, who participated in the Italian movement of Arte Povera, also took part in a group exhibition, in 197, at Kunstmuseum Luzern, curated by Jean-Christophe Ammann and entitled Visualisierte Denkprozesse (Visualized Thought Processes).
