Catalogue published by Kunstmuseum Luzern for the first museum exhibition (Lucerne, 1985) of the work of the American painter Terry Winters, who was later to find affirmation at the international level. (Shortly after the exhibition at Kunstmuseum Luzern, his works were also shown at the Tate Gallery, in London.) His creative praxis is characterized by its slowness, and by its “almost scientific” investigation of forms. Nature’s microcosm is rendered at the level of its molecular structures, which results in original drawings and paintings of which the characteristics are largely reflective of such a mode of research. With this highly original style of painting, Winters decisively commanded a place in the context of contemporary painting, and specifically of the movement of the “New Fauves,” which was known not only in Europe, but also in the United States. For the curator Martin Kunz, Winters’ work was a highly interesting discovery, and allowed him to call attention to some of the less superficial and commercial aspects of the movement of the “New Fauves” which immediately met with such great success. Terry Winters’ aesthetic position came in fact to expression by way of a slow but durable mode of artistic research. The cover of the catalogue was created by the artist especially for the show in Lucerne.
